Textile Tour
Bhutanese textile is home based. Bhutanese weavers
almost all of them women, there are rare cases of
men involved in weaving, are renowned for producing
beautiful textiles in vibrant colors. Most of the
weaving is done on a very basic type of back strap
handloom.
Bhutanese have always depended on Mother Nature for
his basic needs. This dependence on Mother Nature
can be seen in the Bhutanese textile industry.
Although in the current times artificial dyes are
being used, traditionally Bhutanese weavers were
highly dependent on indigenous natural dyes mostly
extracted from plants and lacquer. Small weaving
centers have mushroomed in Thimphu, but if the
clients are interested in seeing the actual
preparation of dyes from vegetables, then the best
places to visit are Khoma in Kurtoe, Dogsum in
Trashiyangtse, Khaling and Radhi in Trashigang all
based in eastern Bhutan. The higher areas in Bhutan
have their own home-based textile industry. While
cotton yarns are used in east, wool is used in the
higher areas to weave the famous “Yathra” or woolen
fabrics. Chumey in Bumthang is the best place to see
this type of textile. There are several outlets for
Bhutanese textiles in all the major towns in the
country. Textile tours are arranged on the basis of
the expression of interest by the clients.
